Art on the Bay

This will be the sixth annual event and it will take place on Labor Day weekend in Walter and Mary Burke Park on the shores of Anchor Bay. Everything will be on display from paintings and drawings to woodwork and jewelry.

As president of the Art on the Bay Committee Susan Burkhardt said, “The art is definitely the highlight. We have artists from all over the state as well as a few neighboring states.”

The event this year will include some new faces and new foods. On September 5th from 1-4pm, Bernadette Kathryn, a classically trained Nashville recording artist will entertain the crowd. The Art Walk will also return for the second year in a row. The 1.5 mile walk will go through downtown New Baltimore starting at 9:15 am on September 5th.

More than 10,000 people attend the event each year and it’s well worth the time.

Inger Loftheim Joins Old Village Paint

paintOld Village Paint – America’s oldest paint and varnish makers since 1816 – has a new, but very well established employee – Inger Loftheim. While Inger Loftheim was just appointed to the position of Chief Marketing Officer, she has actually had a connection to the firm for many, many years. Indeed, she is a sixth generation of her family to work at the business!

Of the appointment, and this strong familial connection to the business, Inger Loftheim said:

“It’s amazing. There’s a lot of pride in it. This business, it’s our name. Through our paint, we deliver a high quality product, because this is the livelihood of our family and that translates into how you deliver it. From generation to generation this business is what has supported our family.”

And as for other members of the existing team at the firm, a similar sense of excitement on the appointment was echoed. President and Owner of Old Village Paint, Laney Landis said that he was: “delighted to welcome Inger to the team, we’ve all been dreaming about this for many years. Setting a Great Table

tableWe aren’t all interior designers and it’s not easy to know how to set a cute table. But with a few tips, you should be able to buy the products you need from EMBraer Paper Goods, or elsewhere, and make that table look great.

First, think about the event that you’re having. Do you want wild, splashy color choices or more subdued tones? If you’re thinking about Father’s Day, for instance, you might want to go with plates in a dark brown hue for the meal and match them with light brown desert plates. The table clothes that you purchase could, similarly, fit into the brown theme. If you’re looking to buy paper goods for a child’s birthday party, you will probably want to go with something more dramatic.

As Beth Sonnenfeld, the VP of Sales with EMBraer Paper Goods explains, “One of the most fun things to do for a child’s party is to mix and match. You might want to buy five blue plates, five yellow plates, five red plates and five green plates. Then mix and match and have a colorful and exciting party.”

One customer of EMBraer Paper Goods, Jack Elio, described his recent party for his parent’s fiftieth anniversary. As he said, “We bought these beautiful gold plates and used the gold theme throughout. The table clothes were a mix of white and gold, the plates were gold, the silverware was white and we bought white and gold balloons. Even though the paper goods were paper and not real china, the room sparkled and everything was beautiful.”

Dallas Art Fair Fun

art-692881_640The Dallas Art Fair is in its seventh year and was held in the downtown Arts District near the Dallas Museum of Art from April 9-12. It is housed in the Fashion Industry Gallery, a two-story space filled with light. This year’s show included more than 90 galleries with galleries from as far away as New York and LA being represented, as well as those from Europe and Asia.

Justine Ludwig, the Director of Exhibitions and Senior Curator at the Dallas Contemporary, said “The art fair brings people from all over, last night at our opening we had a really diverse crowd, more than we’re accustomed too. It wasn’t simply Dallasites, it was people from all over.”

As Ludwig pointed out, “It’s amazing that this fair has galleries from other countries right next to other galleries based in Dallas. And Dallas galleries are really given prominent positions within the fair.”

If you missed it this year – it’s certainly worth having on the calendar for next year!

Two Great Sages of the Land of Israel

JerusalemBefore the onslaught of World War II reared its devastatingly ugly head, the Land of Israel, which was governed under the British Mandate and known as Palestine, was a lively, developing place. Without a doubt the center of the development was in the holy city of Jerusalem.

Among the greatest Jewish religious leaders of that exciting time were Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, and Rabbi Joseph Chaim Sonnenfeld. Although the two men are often seen as enemies with diametrically opposed views on how the new Jewish settlement should relate to the Chief Rabbinate office of the World Zionist Organization, the real truth is that on the more fundamental and basic issues they saw eye to eye.

For example, in 1914 the two traveled together on a tour of new Jewish settlements all over the Land of Israel. Their common goal was to strengthen the spiritual qualities in the men and women settling the Land. The pair danced and sang with the kibbutz members, rejoicing in the shared belief that Jews could exist, and even thrive in their homeland.

Both men were famous and beloved for their extreme love of their fellow Jews, whether secular or religious. Rabbi Kook became famous as the first Chief Rabbi of the Land of Israel; and Rabbi Sonnenfeld was the renowned founder of the Diskin home for orphans.

Rabbi Sonnenfeld died in 1932, leaving a large number of descendants. Rabbi Kook died only three years after Rabbi Sonnenfeld, in 1935. Rabbi Kook had three children from his two wives. Rabbi Zvi Yehuda, Rabbi Kook’s only son, served as the head of Yeshivat Mercaz HaRav, the yeshivah his father had founded, for thirty years, until he died in 1982.
